Tuesday morning dawned vastly different than Monday, with not a cloud in sight and the sun shining on the harbor.
We were up early for the Continental breakfast provided by the hotel, and then headed off to the southwestern part of Mount Desert Island where Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is located.
Everything is pretty close together on the island, and it only took about 30 minutes to get the the lighthouse. Despite being out early, there were still several other tourists already at the scenic spot with us.
We took a short hike to get to a better view of the bay and the lighthouse, and then headed back to the car for the 5 minute drive to Wonderland trail.
Wonderland trail is approximately 1.5 miles round trip, and we strapped Parker into his pack for the trip out to the water. The trail goes out to the rocks where you can see various small creatures in the tide pools created by the receding water.
After spending a little while wandering, we headed back into town to visit Bar Island.
Bar Island is connected to the main island by a land bridge that is only passable when the tide is out. We didn’t know the tide schedule, so as we walked out to the island (around 11am) the tide was coming in. We jumped a small puddle in the middle of the land bridge but didn’t think much of it. When we reached the island we turned around to head back, and the water had already spread about 50 yards across. We stripped off our socks and shoes and splashed back across to the still-dry portion of the bridge, watching as people panicked to get back over the strip of land before it all went under water.
We walked back to town and had iced coffee at Coffee Hound, and then wandered back to our hotel to give Parker some play time out of the baby carrier.
For lunch we ate at the Terrace Grille at our hotel, and then we went back out for a walk to burn off some of lunch. Parker was about ready for a nap but was refusing to nap in the stroller or the crib, so we headed out in the car for a long drive around Acadia. The Park Loop Road is super scenic, and the scenery was completely different from the previous morning when everything was foggy and rainy.
We came back for an early dinner, going over to Blaze in Bar Harbor. Their wood-fired BBQ chicken pizza and duck fat fries with aioli were delicious. Jordan wanted some ice cream afterwards so we splurged on cake batter cookie dough ice cream and mint cookies and cream ice cream from Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium.
We tucked in for the night ready for a super early morning.
